Author Thomas Paine (1737-1809).had a grand vision for society: he was staunchly anti-slavery, and was one of the first to advocate a worldwide peace organization and social security for the poor and elderly. His book Common Sense is an inspiring defense of American Independence from England. It's worth the effort to read Paine's other revolutionary publications: The Crisis (1776), The Rights of Man (1792), and The Age of Reason (1794).
